Yes, you heard it here first! I, myself, am saying, 'There oughta be a law . . . .' But let me explain. These days, there is no detriment to various forms of ill behavior visited upon those of us who are among the rapidly decreasing ranks of the well-behaved. We who would not think of speaking during a live theater performance, cutting into lines, or engaging in other out-and-out rude behavior...

Strike the Root asked for Root Strikers to write their own Declarations of Independence (DOI's) to be published on STR on July 4th, also curiously known as Independence Day. Rob offered as an example 'A Personal Declaration of Independence' (APDOI) which was, as far as I can determine[1], anonymously authored by 'A Friend of Thomas Paine.' One Root Striker, Alfred A.

Selected news items from June 15, 2015. Baghdad, Iraq-- CentCom commander General Frank Jones issued a statement today saying that it may soon be proven that Evil Dictator Saddam Hussein is, indeed, dead. Although soldiers of the Third Infantry Division have not yet breached the lowest level of Bunker #17, they have high hopes of finding the body of the Evil Dictator and refugee from justice,...

Fry the French

We Americans have had a long, ambiguous relationship with the French. We fought them in the French and Indian Wars. They fought the British during the American Revolution. Then they had their own revolution, became a democracy, and practiced the worst kind of mob rule, trying to get a head up on the nobility, so to speak. They gave us an object lesson in how not to act as free people. Merci...

Beyond the count of years I walked the world, and my children built their shrines to me.  Decades and centuries and millennia pass, and still the shrines are built. Temples insubstantial to men, clear to my eyes.  No foundations or walls or roofs, but shrines nonetheless. Holy ground, consecrated  Today, every day, somewhere in the world, the earth is prepared for my coming. ...

It is difficult to find a topic weightier than being stuck between Iraq and a hard place, but I submit the following.
My Cat Supports Terrorism

Huffiana Airington (name changed to protect self from frivolous but well-financed litigation) has taken upon herself the moral duty to inform us that SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) owners support terrorism. The chain of logic is: 1. SUVs* are gas-guzzlers. 2. The more gasoline is used, the more oil is needed. 3. The higher the demand for oil, the more is purchased from Middle...

Note: The following memorandum was leaked to me by a prominent, highly-placed government official who, while he was sweeping up one night, found it crumpled up into a ball and tossed into a waste basket. Note: The deities portrayed in this work are entirely the product of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. They do not bear any resemblance to any actual deity, either living, dead, immortal, or yet to come. I hold in the highest regard and admiration those men and women who venture forth into the unknown. Pioneers are always aware of the risks involved in exploring new frontiers.
Nightfall

'As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances there is a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air - however slight - lest we become unwitting victims of darkness.' ~ Supreme Court Justice William Douglas Place: United States of America Time: A few years from now From: CofC,...

The following article was published on November 27, 2002 in Connect Savannah: Savannah's News, Arts, and Entertainment Weekly 'The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naive and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is' a good citizen driven to...
It's NOT a Democracy

Joseph S. Bommarito 2002-11-01 17:00
The public education system teaches that we live in a democracy, in which the government is ruled by the majority. The founders of the country were students of government and knew that democracy was essentially mob rule with a thin veneer of legality and that the democracies of history had failed. No self-respecting person of that era would call himself a democrat.

Dear U.S. Government, Amitai Etzioni is the author of The Limits of Privacy and an enthusiast for 'domestic passport-like documents that citizens of many countries, including democracies, are required to have with them at all times.' He says, 'Note that presenting such identification is required even when there is no specific evidence that a crime has been committed or a regulation violated.'...

Hi. My name is Joe. I’m a . . . a voter.   I didn’t start right out voting. You know how it goes, you start on the soft stuff for a little buzz and it leads you on, and pretty soon you’re hooked on the hard stuff, the real high.   My sophomore year in high school was when it started. My buddies were getting older guys to...
"Living Wage," Dying City

Joseph S. Bommarito 2002-08-19 16:00
An alliance of the usual suspects consisting of liberal politicians, Green Party members, a group calling itself the Atlanta Living Wage Coalition, labor union members, and other assorted economic lackwits wants to enact a 'living wage' ordinance in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta City Council will vote on the ordinance this Fall, but that is just a starting point. A 'living wage' rally was held...
