Support the Troops Right Here!

Exclusive to STR Do you really support the troops? "Of course I do," you are telling yourself right now. Americans may or may not support the war, but one thing almost all of us agree on is that we support the young men and women who are selflessly serving the United States of America as members of the Armed Forces. "That's a fact," you are telling yourself with patriotic...
Serving One's Country - Correspondence with a Cadet

I received this letter today, 26 October 2004, from a Cadet at the United States Air Force Academy: Sir, After reading your article Losing the War on Terror, I feel compelled to ask, how a man who was a "Distinguished Graduate" of such a fine institution like the united States Military Academy, a man who once served his country in Desert Storm, and a man who, by taking the oath to...
George Bush"s "We" Is Shrinking

Everyone has seen it. President Bush loves to wrap himself in the flag and wear the cloak of wartime President. 'We will stay the course,' he says. Meanwhile, he goes on vacation to his Texas ranch. It is increasingly obvious that when it comes to his 'War on Terra,' the President is wearing no clothes, and his 'we' is beginning to look embarrassingly small. Support for President Bush in the...
Ashcroft Is Winning: Libertarians Begin to Knuckle Under

The patriots are succumbing to the Patriot Act. For the record, I have the greatest respect for the intentions of the fine people alluded to, but not named here. Consider this a lament, a pep talk, a rallying cry. I recently had the final paragraph of one of my articles, 'Let Them Eat Lead,' intentionally deleted without my knowledge. Here is that paragraph: 'On October 14, 1793, Marie...
Thou Shalt Not Kill?

I am agnostic, and I believe that, that is just the way God wants it. I don't disbelieve in God. On the contrary, I've always wanted to believe. In fact, I'm quite certain that God could kick my ass, and I'd like to avoid that. I'm also a sucker for the idea that God might suddenly come down from heaven and make everything right in the world. Perhaps He would end corruption in the United States...
Pity the Poor Soldier

Pity the poor soldier, he needs your support. Killing and maiming are difficult sport. It is not enough that you tithe to his creed. It is not enough that your labor provides for his every need. Throw him a parade! Do it in red, white, and blue. Praise his exploits! Shout it out loud! Ease his insecurity. That's what the soldier needs you to do.
Truth and Lies on the War in Iraq

How did an obscure Russian aviation web site's Alexa ranking shoot from 95,865 over the last 3 months to 7,831 on March 23rd and 3,623 on March 24th? Perhaps because it is one of the few places on the net, or in any media, to find informed, timely, objective information on the situation in Iraq. The name of the site is Venik's Aviation - Aerospace News and Technical Information, which is an...
Defending My Freedom

I am sitting here defending my freedom. By that, I mean exercising my freedom. By that, I mean opposing this naked aggression on Iraq. In agreement, freedom is moot. I revel in defiance because defiance makes me free. I defy this Government. I defy this President. I defy these soldiers. I defy; therefore I am free.
Bush Is a Threat to World Peace

The Bush administration's policies are increasing the risk of attack not particularly on US soldiers, but on US citizens, and the continental United States. This administration's policies are increasing the number of overt enemies of the United States, the hostility of the enemies we do have, and the probability that any response will be against American civilians, not the US military. In...
Message to the Troops: Resist!

Dear Soldier of the U.S. Military: Considering the common practice of talking about "supporting the troops" in times of hostilities, I should let you know how I feel.

Journal of a "Model Officer"

In February 1990, I was a model officer of the U.S. Army. In 1984, I had graduated from West Point as a Distinguished Cadet, 23rd in my class of about 1,000. In 1988, I graduated from New York Medical College as a member of the national medical honor society, AOA. In 1989, I had completed my internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the most prestigious Army Medical facility. I then became...
