Chicago Smoking Bans Temporarily on Hiatus

The Chicago Tribune (maybe rr, bugmenot) informs us that several towns in the Chicago area are temporarily lifting their smoking bans for the upcoming football games. While I’m no fan of either sports or smoking, of course this is welcome news to any libertarian. But the real question is, why just a temporary ban of the bans? The only logical explanation I can think of is that some of the alderman are Bears fans. And smokers. Or they own bars.

While I agree with the principle that banning stuff is bad, I thought I’d pass on some comments about my direct experience of the smoking ban that has recently been imposed here in Scotland, where I live.

The ban is great! I absolutely love it! Going out in Edinburgh is so much more enjoyable than ever before. You can breathe better when you are in pubs, clubs and cafes, it smells better, and you can even see better! (Without the clouds of smoke)

For the past three years I’ve been involved in running a (non profit making) cafe in Edinburgh that was entirely non-smoking since long before the ban was considered. Our place was an oasis of clean air in the city. Now all the other places (which could not do the same as us because of commercial considerations) have had to catch up. And the city has benefitted as a result.

I was a smoker before the ban, though I still favoured it’s introduction. Now I have quit smoking after years of trying, and I feel so much better as a result. It’s another reason why I am grateful for the ban, as I am certain it played a big role in helping me to stay quit. Many, many other people in Scotland are saying the same thing.

I regularly travel to England where the the ban has not (yet) been introduced. It disturbs me slightly when I walk into a bar or a train or bus station and find people smoking. It seems so backwards. Sometimes I find myself breathing in someone’s second-hand smoke as I am eating a meal in a public place.

It is just under a year since the Scottish ban was introduced. Already it is hard to imagine life before the ban. Why did we tolerate smoking in public buildings for so long, I often wonder? I have heard hardly any complaits from anyone about the ban. Any complaints I have heard have only been semi-serious, as it seems that - now that the ban is here - people pretty much agree that it is a good thing for us all.
