When I was a kid my dad’s favorite pass-times were diving and playing pool for beers/money while telling and listening to tall tales. He use to drag me along to some pretty interesting dives so that my mother would think that he wasn’t getting into any big trouble. One of my favorite places was when on our lobster gathering treks to The Keys we would end up at Captain Tony’s for the late afternoons. The “salt of the earth” oozed from the man’s skin and I could sit and listen to him tell stories for hours. The local guitar pickers were always good too. The man was the last of a breed and will be missed.
He inspired me in many ways including my column Gumption http://www.strike-the-root.com/52/davis/davis3.html.
May he rest in peace. I believe that he’d want any and all to raise a glass of beer and give a good cheer to celebrate his long, eventful life today. I know I will as I put on some Jimmy Buffet music, shoot a game of pool and wax nostalgic this evening.
