So Many Names, So Little Room
“Congress already has run out of space on a memorial created last year to honor all of the U.S. service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
The War Congress is running out of room to place the names of the dead at its makeshift memorial in the Rayburn Office Building. I would suggest permanent placement on the halls of the building for future visitors to peruse. Perhaps, instead of names, the social security numbers of the fallen can be listed. That should take up less space on the structure and allow more victims (oops, heroes) to be added. Now if only we could mandate that names of innocent Iraqis and Afghans be listed, as well. How much space would then be necessary?
The idea of placing names of the war dead on memorials is coming back to haunt the architects of state-sponsored destruction. The viewer gets a better sense of the reality that war is not heroic sacrifice but rather an endless chronology of personal heartache, death and misery.
