"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Voting with Your Feet vs. Voting with Ballots
If you think your taxes are too high, the schools are lousy, the cops are incompetent brutes, the cost of living is too high, or whatever else is bugging you, don't think that voting for another politician based on promises to fix it all is gonna work. Your concerns are forgotten the day after the election. Instead, do a little research, then pack up your shit and head off for someplace better. (Cato Institute podcast, 10 minutes)
