Short bio:

Matthew Bryan resides in North Las Vegas, Nevada. A college dropout, he claims no qualifications other than a fervent desire for self-sufficiency and a peaceful existence, free from governmental intrusion. His patient, understanding wife regularly goads him into high-pitched, libertarian rants--just for practice. They have two cats and a dog.  His blog can be viewed here.

Flight of the Fear Mongers

The State of Florida has beneficently granted its citizens the right to protect themselves. Extending Castle Doctrine to include personal space within the public sphere, the new law allows individuals to use force against force when "a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm" is extant. Rest assured, the fear mongers are aflutter. The Washington Post frets: "The bill...
The Last Great Act of Defiance

There was a t-shirt, popular during my early teen years. Across the top in large font was writ: 'The Last Great Act of Defiance.' Underneath the lettering was a large set of talons, suggestive of a large bird of prey. The talons were extended forward as such birds do when they are diving for a kill. The perspective of the viewer was as if suspended from the bird's belly. Below stood a mouse, feet...
In Defense of Mayor Goodman

The hens are clucking again. Now they chastise Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman for affirming his love for Bombay Sapphire to a class of fourth graders. For the uninitiated, our self-proclaimed 'Happiest Mayor in America ' has more than once run afoul of the similarly anointed Guardians of All Things Discrete and Appropriate.

With the recent photo of Prince Harry sporting a swastika has come the all-too-predictable round of righteous indignation from the insensitivity police. The House of Windsor is rocked yet again by regrettably common behavior within the ranks. The anti-defamation industry impatiently reminds the perpetually boorish goyim that it's not nice to glorify Nazis. The scourge of the nattering culture...
Morality: The New Black

The morning after our most recent exercise--not counting Christmas--in mass dementia, otherwise known as Election Day, we learned the tide was turned by 'moral values,' ostensibly. The debate continues apace. Bush won because, allegedly, he represents these values; Kerry lost because he doesn't. Kerry's camp is sufficiently outraged about their boy's perceived lack of morals--and, by extension,...

"Obtaining a suspect's name in the course of a Terry stop serves important government interests.' ~ Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy The Terry stop is named for a 1968 Supreme Court decision in which the court ruled that police may detain someone for a 'reasonable suspicion' of wrongdoing in order to gain information. No probable cause need be latent. Under Terry, the detainee must...
Friendly Fire: Bush Strafes Syntax, Bombs Logic

I had resolved not to watch the presidential speech Monday night. The integrity of my television's cathode ray tube was at stake. Predictably, my resolve withered in the face of the rare opportunity to see the Mad Cowboy on national television sporting scuffed up face and vicarious stigmata from a poetically justified bicycle crash. (Dear Mr. President, How to save the world: Try eating pretzels...
The Few, the One and the Two

As the images of torture and humiliation wrought by American soldiers in Saddam's old prisons spewed forth, our esteemed leader begged the country and world not to judge the U.S. and its military by the actions of a 'few.' The ubiquitous, ugly Few raise their vile heads yet again. Bush's pathetic, bathetic attempt to paint the atrocities as merely an aberration only fueled the frenzy of finger...
Why Are You So Bitchy?

I maintain a small e-mail list consisting mainly of family and friends. I frequent many liberty-themed websites and subscribe to a number of likewise-devoted reviews and journals. I endeavor to glean from these sources articles that vividly illustrate the futility of the current system, as well as items I believe present a more viable alternative. Occasionally I send items outlining the basics...
Nevada--Libertarian Leaning?

Matthew Bryan 2004-04-26 16:00
I live in Nevada. When pundits and the like discuss Nevada, they sometimes describe it as 'libertarian' or 'libertarian-leaning.' Even our elected officials love to glamorize our state as the last vestige of the Wild West. So-called alternative weekly papers in Las Vegas, where I reside, mewl incessantly about this purported libertarian streak and the social havoc it allegedly wreaks upon the...
