"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Teacher in Los Angeles Molest Case Reportedly Paid $40G to Drop Appeal of Firing
Remember that the next time your local school district counters evidence of their dismal educational performance with "if we only had more money..." Nationwide, according to the governments own stats, not even 25 percent of 8th graders are proficient in ANY subject, let alone the essentials. It is a disgrace. But, again, I see that as a parent issue, really. It is our responsibility to see to it that our children are educated. My internet connection costs less than people spend on cable television and a computer can be had for what many spend on a televsion or a television and video game system. A cheap Kindle -- two months cable TV bill. The free books available on line through such things as Project Gutenberg are absolutely incredible, and are able to be read via computer or Kindle. Even in areas with bad public schools, motivated parents and children can obtain an outstanding education, if they assume responsibility for making it happen. People just don't make that sort of thing a priority for whatever reason.
