"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Speaking Up Is Hard to Do: Researchers Explain Why
It is hard to do, in the sense that it can be very scary. I'm not joking about my paranoid mode receipt collection. Speaking up, standing up, and living principles of liberty, as opposed to just espousing them, can be very frightening, especially in high risk situations. But we have to, especially those of us who are parents because... well, we can talk for all eternity to our children about the importance of standing up for what is right, even if it is hard, but if they see us fail to do so, see us acquiesce to what we know is wrong, then our words are empty and we fail to impart those essential values. And, perhaps that is why we find ourselves today with so many of our fundamental rights lost and in a struggle to retain the few that we have left.
