"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Shades of FDR
Yes, yes, the free market is such a terrible system for allocating resources.
You know what's a better idea? Let's slaughter perfectly healthy animals - to keep prices high. Reminds me of the AAA implemented by FDR. Genius economics. (https://goo.gl/t411b1)
It's like the "ownership society" - let's create a society in which everyone has a home. How to accomplish this? Let's keep home prices high indefinitely!
Now I'm not in favor of the lawsuit against "price fixing". It's the problem with the system as a whole. The dairy farmers can't make money because the economy is entirely discoordinated. Because of the regulations, inflation, taxation, etc., businesses are desperate to stay afloat, hanging on by the skin of their teeth.
"They don't have any way to throttle the production of milk other than to eliminate cows. And when the price of milk goes down to ruinous levels, it's basically the only way out."
