"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Quick, Act Surprised: Jail Does Nothing To Stop Drug Users From Using Drugs
Submitted by A. Magnus on Wed, 2017-06-21 00:00
"Imprisoning more drug offenders does nothing to lower drug use or overdose rates, a study conducted by the Pew Charitable Trusts (PCT) concluded Monday. PCT measured drug imprisonment rates across 48 states in 2014 and found that higher rates of drug imprisonment did not result in lower rates of drug use, lower drug arrests or lower overdose deaths. The organization said in a letter to the White House that its findings strongly suggest that tougher drug sentencing is not an effective deterrent for drug crime."
