(NYT, Registration Required) According to the New York Times, almost 16 percent of the nation live in poverty. Of course, they refer to the American version of poverty, which has little in common with the poverty of many parts of the world, where mothers watch their children die of hunger before their very eyes, but the increase they note in the rate of American “poverty” is significant.
