"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
The People Know What They Want & They Deserve to Get It! (Good and Hard!)

In 1971 President Richard Nixon imposed wage & price controls despite believing that this would harm the economy. Congress passed the law in 1970 fully believing Nixon would never implement it and then use that against him during his re-election campaign. History shows that Nixon’s hunch was right. The bad economy wasn’t blamed on him because “hey, he tried” the popular, though futile and counter-productive market interventions and Nixon went on to win by a landslide in 1972.
