"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Gonzales Questions Habeas Corpus
Submitted by strike on Fri, 2007-01-19 17:00
"In one of the most chilling public statements ever made by a U.S. Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales questioned whether the U.S. Constitution grants habeas corpus rights of a fair trial to every American. 'There is no expressed grant of habeas in the Constitution; there's a prohibition against taking it away,' Gonzales said." Rather reminiscent of Clinton era interpretations of the definition of sex, but certainly much more ominous.
