"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken

"Speaking of governments spying on citizens to no good end, a British MP reports (here via the BBC ) on that country's "spycams everywhere" policy: "CCTV leads to massive expense and minimum effectiveness [exactly as Ringo's Law predicts]. It creates a huge intrusion on privacy, yet provides little or no improvement in security." Meanwhile, the London Telegraph asks about the estimated 4.2 million surveillance cameras in Britain (including roughly one million in London alone): "If they do not stop crime or catch criminals, what are they for?""
