This title and certain things withing the article are very misleading. The title should have read, "New York Man Faces Five Years in Jail for ‘Linking’ to Online Bootlegged Videos"
The article begins with this warning, "You may want to think twice the next time you share a link to your favorite video."
To state this a little more truthfully, "You may want to think twice the next time you share a link to your favorite bootlegged video."
We read further on in this article, "The advocacy group Demand Progress has claimed that McCarthy never reproduced copyrighted material, and that his website simply linked to other sites."
What Demand Progress seems to have 'inadvertently' left unsaid was the fact that Brian McCarthy was evidently "simply linking" to sites that were illegally reproducing (and/or distributing) copyrighted material.
