NATO Needs Afghanistan?

"It is becoming clearer and clearer that one of the reasons that the West (and particularly the US) is in Afghanistan is as a kind of trial run for a larger NATO. The problem that NATO has had in the past is that it was originally constructed to shield Europe from the USSR. Now that the USSR is no longer around, NATO leaders have had to reconstruct its purpose from the ground up."
