I fully expect to be in conflict with the State on that very issue at some point, as I was discussing with a family member a few weeks ago. Now that women are allowed in combat, it won't be too long before the mandatory sign-up for males extends to females. After all, the argument will run, equal is equal. With the periodic government floating of the idea (testing the waters) of a mandatory or socially/economically pressured volunteer youth service period, I expect that as well, with AmeriCorp (I think that is what the Peace Corp morphed into, if memory serves) providing the structural framework, the end result a 'choice' between military or civil service to satisfy a period of government required service. And, of course, there ain't no way in hell my little family will be submitting to such demands. That is an if all else fails, cross the border type of issue for us.
