"First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me."

Mindful Eating as Food for Thought
(NY Times, Free Reg Req) After living in the desert for so long, there are many things about urban living that catch my eye in ways that they didn't used to. Or perhaps things have changed since I've been away. Whichever it may be, I find myself in places I haven't been for years, like in McDonald's drinking coffee and using the Internet while on the road or at big box store mega-center supermarkets. I am shocked, just shocked, at how big people are, young and old alike. It has got to be, in part, the chemicals in the food. I was listening to my girls discuss a commercial they saw for some toaster breakfast 'treat'. The youngest said that looks good. The middle said, it only looks good on the outside, it's full of poison. The oldest went on to explain about high fructose corn syrup and artificial coloring. And then the big girls said to the little girl “we can make it much better homemade and it will be real food, not fake food.” I think my work in that department has been a success, and none of mine will be waddling around trying to remember what their toes look like.
