Jesus, Anarchy, and the Golden Rule

"So in everything, do unto others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." ~ Matthew 7:12

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." ~ Matthew 37:40

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." ~ Matthew 5:9

It is truly amazing what politics and the State have done to Christianity--and nowhere is this more evident than the recent GOP "debate" in South Carolina. While Newt received raucous applause and standing ovations as he reveled in thirst for Muslim blood, Ron Paul was booed and jeered for arguing in favor of Christ's admonition and a Golden Rule foreign policy.

This is what the evil Republicans have done to the good and decent instincts of most Christians. They have accused "the Left" of wanting to destroy their religion, their country, and their way of life while advocating a Mussoliniesque program of torture, endless war, empire--and wallowing in it.

While wrapping their socialism, statism, and megalomania is "family values," they rail against abortion while turning a blind eye to the mass murder of innocents committed by the US government overseas in order to get the Evangelical vote. Paul is the only candidate up there--probably the only national politician--who is consistently pro-life: anti-abortion, anti-war, and anti-capital punishment. Like John the Baptist screaming in the wilderness, Paul is more prophet than politician, and a statesman--and more importantly, he represents a philosophy--that any Christian who truly values the words and deeds of Christ should support.

When Romney or Santorum or Newt or any other of these fascists takes over the White House and government spending skyrockets and nothing that Christ valued is even remotely closer to a reality, I will have no pity for those who cheered on the bloodshed. You reap what you sow.

I only hope that this will make Christians realize that ethics and morality are completely and utterly destroyed by the State, politics, elections, and the right of some individuals to defy natural law and claim for themselves the right to initiate aggression against the innocent with no punishment, accountability, or apology. And although nearly all political movements try to claim Jesus as a champion of their philosophy, like nearly all great historic and prophetic figures in history, Jesus was essentially an anarchist.

Throughout his life and teaching, Jesus attempted to separate the peaceful order of civil society away from the coercive state--in his case, the Roman Empire. At the time of Jesus's birth, Rome was a large, centralized, and stratified empire, saddled with the bureaucracy of a standing army and a welfare state, and the de facto "world's policeman" through Pax Romana (sound familiar?).

Under this "Pax," all were subject to an excise tax, and eventually the Israelites as well relied on Rome's police protection--and with that, all of the blessings of government goodies. With the influence of Romans and Pharisees, a welfare state was imposed on the Israelites in Judea, and people soon began to look with envy eyes on their neighbor's possessions while electing politicians to bring home the loot. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus condemns the Pharisees and their influence in Israel for this top-down governance of society, for imposing a tax on Jewish temples that fed the coffers of the Judean government, and for overturning Moses's kosmos of free will offerings distributed by ministers to serve the needy.

When brought before Pontius Pilate, Jesus said, "My Kingdom is not of this world." Jesus was telling Pilate that he and his followers were not subject to the laws, dictates, and edicts of Rome, that the Roman state had no jurisdiction over his private, stateless kingdom. The horizontal, decentralized, bottom-up, and fundamentally anarchic society that Jesus had founded stood in stark and dire contrast from the Roman Imperial model. As his ideas spread like fire, an order based on institutionalized theft, barbarism, murder, and violence like the Roman State did the only thing it could do when faced with such a threat to its interests and condemned Jesus to brutal torture and death. But as Mises argued, an idea cannot be wiped out by any army, force, or state.

Jesus essentially created a stateless society in the middle of the largest empire the world had ever known at the time, an alternative order to the coercive slavery of man-made law, man-made idols, and man-made empire. No man, especially Caesar, was "Father," Jesus said, "Thou Father art in Heaven." The law of individual freedom and the inalienable rights of men stemmed not from the rule of fallible men in palaces, but from God and our nature. If the Golden Rule that governs private society implies anarchy, so be it! Withdraw your consent, he said. Peace, non-violence, and voluntarism are the alternatives to empire and the welfare-warfare state.

But thanks to politics and scheming Republicans, proud declarations of affinity for razing countries to pieces from the air is lauded and sacrificing, killing, and dying for the state is the highest honor. This is how predominantly Christian South Carolina could boo and jeer someone advocating the Golden Rule--the very essence of Christ's message and philosophy.

Republicans deserve a lion's share of the blame for this disgusting appeal to nationalism and for waving the bloody flag of war in Christ's name, but Evangelicals, too, should be ashamed of themselves for applauding Caesar's war machine.

Jesus pointed his finger at Caesar, spread the truth about his lack of clothes, and tried to liberate the Kingdom away from those who would loot, plunder, and tax in order for men to be free, both personally and spiritually.

Here's hoping those who follow Jesus will listen.

Jesus preached against the demon engine of city-Statism, agriculture. Not only was he an anarchist, as you've correctly divined, he was an anarcho-primitivist, the only non-contradictory variant of anarchism.

Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

~ Jesus
verse 40, chapter 4, The Jefferson Bible

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

~ Jesus
verse 23, chapter 11, The Jefferson Bible

It's clear that the Jesus character was neither capitalists nor libertarian.

Darkcrusade's picture

An extremely important verse that should never be neglected concerning Jesus:the Christ and the state.

Mat 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
Mat 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
Mat 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Mat 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

The legal maxim of '' a fact is stablished on the testimony of two witnesses'' comes from the Bible.

Here is the second authority from Dr.Luke.-

Luk 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
Luk 4:6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
Luk 4:7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
Luk 4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

This evidence points to the fact that all the manmade contrivance of Government is an anti-christ.

Men will be ruled by tyrants or governed by God.

Mat 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, [ye] hypocrites?
Mat 22:19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
Mat 22:20 And he saith unto them, Whose [is] this image and superscription?
Mat 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
Mat 22:22 When they had heard [these words], they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

Whos image is impressed in you? Are you simply a trousered ape? Or are you created by the hand of God, The Imago Dei?

Who discovered men are free?

No one knows who first made the discovery that men are free. The fragmentary records begin with one person. There is no historical proof that he really existed, but the story holds its own self-evident truth; and for countless generations, it was handed down from father to son.
They said that when Ur was the great empire. (about 4,000 years ago,Did he go to gambol?),That was back in the days when people believed that everything was controlled by the whims and fancies of pagan gods. Water-gods, when they felt so disposed, made water flow; sea-gods moved the waves and tides;
air-gods controlled the winds; gods whispered in trees, roared in thunder, and brought rain to the fields. Fertility-gods caused seeds to sprout and women to bear children.Gods controlled men just as they controlled allother things. As water ran and winds blew, so men thought and felt and acted as the gods might will. But Abraham denied the existence of all these pagan gods. He insisted that there is only one God-the God of all things, the God who creates and judges. He taught his increasing family that God is Rightness, Reality, and Truth; that man is free and self-controlling and responsible for his own acts; that each person is free to do good or evil, as he may choose, but that any wrong act will result in punishment to the evildoer.

Much later another mighty work is performned to extract the hebrews from bondage, and LIVE for
FORTY YEARS(to gambol?) in the desert.

One wonders how Moses stuck it out. But for 40 years, he kept on telling them that they were free men; that they were responsible for themselves. "Your murmurings are not against us," he told them, "but against the LORD."

But slaves are passive. They submit. They obey. And they expect to be fed. They wanted Moses to be their king so that they could hold him responsible and blame him for everything. But
Moses turned them down and kept on insisting that they were free, responsible for themselves; that there was no pagan god to control them and be responsible for them; that no man could rule another man. But the children of Israel kept on murmuring, drifting back into idolatry,
and sneaking every chance to worship their pagan gods.

The Ten Commandments

(found in north america> http://www.truthontheweb.org/frcomsto.htm )

Finally, as a last resort, Moses reduced the teachings of Abraham to a written code of moral law. Known as the "Ten Commandments," it stands today as the first and greatest document of individual freedom in the recorded history of man. Each of the Ten Commandments is addressed
to the individual as a self-controlling person responsible for his own thoughts, words, and acts. And
each of them recognizes liberty and freedom as inherent in the nature of man.

The first commandment tells the individual to reject pagan gods and recognize his own worth as a human being, subject to no power but that of the Creator and Judge.

The second tells the individual to form no imag- e of abstract rightness, but to direct his reverence toward the divine in truth.

The third tells the individual not to speak frivolously of the Creator and Judge. Knowledge of fundamental truth - cause and effect - is of first importance and should I be taken very seriously.

The fourth tells the individual to devote some time (one day out of seven) to reflection on the eternal verities.

The fifth recognizes the family as the primary human relationship and establishes the parent's authority over the child as the only authority which a child should accept for his own profit.

The sixth stresses the sanctity of human life -the individual's right to live, which is a right that must not be violated by any other person.

The seventh establishes the principle of contract - the inviolability of promises given by persons to each other and the double sanctity of the mariage contract, which is the basis of the family.

The eighth recognizes the individual's right to own property.

The ninth recognizes free speech - the individual's control over his own utterances and his responsibility for their truth.

The tenth emphasizes again the right of ownership. Not even in thought should a person violate the property rights of another.

The Decalogue of Moses is one of the most amazing statements of truth ever written, but it was too revolutionary to find acceptance in the pagan world of his time; the ancient Israelites wanted a king rather than a code of personal conduct.

The biological family of Hominoidea are known as apes, humans too. At any rate, if you think we're made in the image of God, God is necessarily a Hominoidea ape too. (I suspect Cetaceans have differing opinions.) But does he wear trousers?

And which 10 Commandments of Moses do you refer to? Exodus 34 refers to the second set of tables of stone, claiming that the second set contained "the words that were on the first."

1. Thou shalt worship no other god (For the Lord is a jealous god).
2. Thou shalt worship no other god (For the Lord is a jealous god).
3. The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep in the month when the ear is on the corn.
4. All the first-born are mine.
[...]
10. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk.

Double dose of jealousy. No sauteed lamb. An "amazing," "revolutionary" code of "personal conduct," indeed.

VoiceInTheWilderness's picture

Ah, but one examines the green eyed monster through a green lens. Righteous jealousy is much more than what man has made of it. So too is Sacrifice. If one does his brother wrong, should the words, "I'm sorry" make it right? What is sacrifice but the act of proving one's contrition to another? Our Creator had simply and Righteously provided man a way of proving the sincerity of his contrition for abrogating his duty to his Creator. One should be able to see the fairness at requiring the first-fruits, for to give of what's left over after the one who has done wrong takes the best, hardly denotes contrition. Nay, it instead shows derision, even defiance.

Thankfully, Christ died to fulfill the law as The way of ultimately demonstrating to us The way to live it.

Obedience to that which is proved Good, is better than sacrifice.

We are becoming the soilent green and the Morlaocks coming outa their holes to get us. What makes the bible infallable? Man. God stopped talking to man around 4 to 5000 years ago. Anyone who hears him today is or should be in a nut house. Religion has no house here, has nothing to do with here only attending to manners to infect the grub organizim that some how figuers it owns us and can do what-ever-in-the -hell-it-wants. The Apostle Paul was a completely different fellow from that eastern Jesus character, and is the main influence on Western Christianity. He was clearly a butch city-Statist:

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. ~Romans 13:1

And Paul was good with the agricultural city-Statist culture putting food under lock and key and starving people into submission of working for the emergent elite.

If any would not work, neither should he eat. ~2 Thessalonians 3:10

TANSTAAFL, as Heinlein called it, even though that has been true for only a single specie, and then, for only 0.1% of human history. In agricultural city-Statism (civilization) you have to work for The Man to pay for food held under lock and key instead of freely hunting and gathering it. Nothing is free for the foraging.

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters... Ephesians 6:5

That city-Statist line suits hierarchical neo-cons, capitalist, and rightwing libertarians rather well. They like to Lord-it-over others.

Although libertarians tend to squeal when the tables are turned. At least when it's middle management—the gubbmit—doing the Lording-over. They're cravenly submissive when it's upper management—the business of America is business—doing the Lording-over.

P.S. Don't forget Paul was into sacred pederasty. Read Philemon 1:9-11 for an overt Greek pederasty joke that any honest Greek scholar understands clearly. Paul was one sick fellow, as are many of the priestcraft today who follow his example of sexually Lording-it-over "useful" little boys.

G'day Westernerd,

Although I do not consider myself a "Christian", per se, I found myself wanting to stand and cheer for what you presented here today! You, and Jesus[sic], get a 10 star vote from me, because not one in a million have eyes to 'see' what you have written. Thank you.

More equivocating word games, per se, from Suverans2.

He says "Although I do not consider myself a 'Christian', per se..."

Yet he has also states earlier: "The Holy Scripture is the inexhaustible word of God," and "All of Christianity would come crashing down in a rubble pile if one(1) prophecy of christ were shown to be unfullfilled. The critics have had 2,000 years to no avail."

At any rate, consider Christianity a rubble pile, if judged solely by S2's reckoning:

"This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." ~Matthew 24

It's been WAY longer than a generation. Looks like that bus isn't gonna show up.

Neither is your other religio-economic salvationist hope.

I've sat in a pew and heard preachers explain away the plain meaning of the word, mostly via dispensationalism. Its as convincing as Marx claiming a glorious worker's paradise is just around the corner. That ain't happening.

And neither is Jesus. That bus is long overdue; he ain't showing up, literally.

Now LITERARILY, as opposed to literally, the Sun of God returns every winter Solstice (Christmas) to be born again, and overcomes the Prince of Darkness on Ishtar's holiday (oops, forgot to Christianize the moment when Day becomes longer than Night on Spring Solstice.)

The Jesus myth is just another literary story in a several thousand years long line of solar deity worship.

Astrotheology, mythicism, drugs, and sacred sex are concepts upon which Christianity is founded.

Hey, just the other day I observed the solar deity come in the clouds in glory. Ra-amen!

How can you put up with all this. God has not been proven, not that It needs to be because the diety is demonstrated daily. The only Place Jesus is mentioned is in the bible and new testament written 80 to 100 years after his death and the death of the witnesses, so whos to question? There is not hell, only darkness of your soul separared from your physical self screaming into darknes of which you cannot hear your own words or screams--we'er doing that today. The bible was written by man not God. I cannot believe that a powerful deiety would leave his words into the hands of the most fallable creature on earth, Man. All of this is quoting what dusty, ancients have said and ignore the current research of the day. Who here has the genius to interpret those greek and latin words. Yo are taking it on the hope that it is right, blind leading the blind. None of this has to do with taking down the maggot.

The Sad Truths of Internet Trolls:

1. Trolls enjoy using shock-value statements, [and bald-faced lies], to get angry responses from others.
2. Trolls gain energy by you insulting them.
3. Trolls gain energy when you get angry.
4. Trolls are immune to criticism and logical arguments. True trolls cannot be reasoned with, regardless of how sound your logical argument is.
5. Trolls do not feel remorse like you and me. They have sociopathic tendencies, and accordingly, they delight in other people having hurt feelings.
6. Trolls consider themselves separate from the social order.
7. Trolls do not abide by etiquette or the rules of common courtesy.
8. Trolls consider themselves above social responsibility.

Thank you, Westernerd; an outstanding article at least until you wrote that Jesus was an anarchist. It was indeed breathtaking to see the heavily Christian audience in SC hiss and boo the very mild suggestion that the Golden Rule should apply to government. It speaks volumes about the link between religion and government, about belief and bigotry.

I do wonder, though, whether you can be right about Jesus. You mention his words when brought to Pilate; those I see are in John 19:11, namely "Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above." This follows verse 7, where "The Jews" told Pilate that Jesus had "made himself the Son of God."

So you'll agree I presume that by "above" he was referring to God. It was an immensely powerful and courageous reply to the threat he'd just been given. But we must surely acknowledge in that case that he was reminding the Governor that all government has power because God has put it in place; exactly the point of Romans 13:1.

That, surely, expresses a terminally authoritarian, hierarchical world-view, the very opposite of anarchism?

Paul's picture

Yeah, it might be a bit of a stretch to call Jesus an anarchist; although there are interpretations of Romans 13:1 not so subservient to government authority, e.g. http://www.freewebs.com/macinta/AO.html

"You reap what you sow."
This cuts both ways. Perhaps Christians have been antagonized enough by libertarians making fun of their beliefs, that they were less inclined to be charitable to the only libertarian on the stage when he said this.

"...they rail against abortion while turning a blind eye to the mass murder of innocents committed by the US government overseas..."
There is no inconsistency here, but just another case of misunderstanding Christians. Being pro-life does not turn a person into a pacifist! If I'm not mistaken, Christians believe all these wars are defense, and guess what? In defense you are allowed to kill somebody. Their error is not inconsistency in being pro-life, but in buying the line that invading other countries constitutes defense. Of course defensive war is fought only in one's own territory. We should stop whacking Christians for being inconsistent (which only shuts down any conversation with them), and start asking them what "defense" means.

We should not attribute Paul's writings (e.g. The Epistle to the Romans) to the man called Jesus [sic].

Matthew 20:25 But having called them, Jesus said, You know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them, and the great ones exercise authority over them. 26 But it will not be so among you. (Literal Translation of the HOLY BIBLE translated by Jay P. Green Sr.)

Suverans2's picture

Woke up way-y-y too early this morning and had trouble getting back to sleep, so y'all are stuck with me for awhile. lol Okay, here goes...

    ETYMOLOGY [of the name JESUS]:
Middle English, from Late Latin Iesus, from Greek Iesous, from Hebrew yesû'a, from yehôsûa', Joshua ; see Joshua1 (Source: American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language)

    ETYMOLOGY [of the name Joshua]:
Late Latin Ioshua, from Hebrew yehôsûa', Yahweh [sic] (is) salvation; see hwy in Semitic roots (Ibid.)

So? Where is this leading?

Technically yehôsûa' should be translated "halloo Yah", which means, "call upon the name of Yah", which in turn is idiomatic[1] for, "call upon the authority of Yah"

Here is where this is leading. The PTB in the Roman Empire of that day, (just as the PTB of the Roman Empire today), did not want anyone calling on any authority but the CAESARS...they are jealous gods. Sound familiar? ;)

And what was this "doctrine"?

Man, this is fun!! And what is the ONLY decree we read of in the so-called New Testament?

What these "high priests" were afraid of is that the CAESAR would catch wind of their "doctrine" and they too would be nailed up on a stake for sedition[2].

Act 24:5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world [the Roman Empire], and a ringleader of the sect [party] of the Nazarenes...

Basically sedition is kind of a 'catch-all charge'; it's what your government may try to charge you with some day...when they can't really find any evidence to charge you with anything else.

I'm taking the time to type this all out, in the hopes that at least one of you will read it.

Sedition. Communication or agreement which has as its objective the stirring up of treason or certain lesser commotions, or the defamation of the government. Sedition is advocating, or with knowledge of its contents knowingly publishing, selling or distributing any document which advocates, or, with knowledge of it purpose, knowingly becoming a member of any organization which advocates the overthrow or reformation of the existing form of government of this state by violence or unlawful means. An insurrectionary movement tending towards treason, but wanting an overt act; attempts made by meetings or speeches, or by publications, to disturb the tranquility of the state. See 18 U.S.C.A. § 2383 et seq. See also Alien and sedition laws; Smith Act. ~ Black's Law Dictionary, Sixth Edition (c.1991), page 1357
