City of Des Moines’ Pans to Avert Sledding Lawsuits before Council Tonight
“Des Moines is among a growing list of cities looking for ways to protect themselves from lawsuits that can arise when people are injured while sledding on public property … Sioux City faced a $2.75 million payout when a man injured his spinal cord after sliding backward into a parking sign. The city’s insurance carrier paid $1.97 million.” This is the flip side of the nanny-state coin. A guy hurts himself because he decided to take a recreational risk and he holds the government – ultimately the taxpayers - responsible for his own poor judgement.
