A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Lose

Pat Robertson very clearly stated his approval of state-sponsored assassination- then claimed he didn’t say that, despite video and audio recordings to the contrary. Now, Rush Limbaugh has been caught in the same delusional game. Limbaugh is quoted on his program making the following obscene remark: “Cindy Sheehan is just Bill Burkett. Her story is nothing more than forged documents, there's nothing about it that's real…” Now, according to Keith Olbermann at MSNBC.com, Limbaugh has judged his remarks about Cindy Sheehan “so unpopular, so subversive, and so crazy….. that he has found it necessary to deny he said them - even when there are recordings and transcripts of them - and to brand those who’ve claimed he said them as crackpots and distorters. More over, that amazing temple to himself, his website, has been scrubbed clean of all evidence of these particular remarks, and to ‘prove’ his claim that he never made the remarks in question on August 15, he has misdirected visitors to that site to transcripts and recordings of remarks he made on August 12.”

The full transcript of what Limbaugh really said can be seen at Olbermann’s blog entry, as well. Pat Robertson’s excuse may be due to a psychosis brought on by spending too much time immersed in the Old Testament. What is Limbaugh’s problem- pressure on the brain from his anal cyst? Loss of circulation from having “half his brain tied behind his back?” Or is it boredom inspired by the intellectual (but highly profitable) rut he’s been in for the last ten or more years?

Comments

I'm going to defend Rush to a certain degree only because I heard both the original comments and the later explanation of them.

Rush did not say that Cindy Sheehan's underlying story--that her son died in Iraq and that she wants to meet with the president--was false, like "forged documents." In fact, he went to great pains to explain that he believed her story and felt sympathy for her. (Whether or not he actually feels sympathy for her is a matter for discussion, but nevertheless he did say that.)

The "phony," "forged documents" part of her story to which he was referring is the media circus that cropped up around her protest. It's obvious that a number of left-wing types with agendas beyond simply opposing the war have attached themselves to Cindy Sheehan. The media, which is pro-State but still mostly anti-Republican, is only too happy to use the Sheehan story as an opportunity to "get Bush." The news media couldn't care less about Sheehan or about the war; all they want is to "get" a Republican president.

Now, Bush deserves to be "gotten," and his war is a horrible thing, but there is a certain amount of truth in Rush's statement that the Cindy Sheehan story being told in the press is indeed "phony," used as an excuse to get Bush.

I hope Cindy Sheehan succeeds and that the war is ended, but I also believe in being fair to Rush, especially as one who heard the "forged documents" comment the first time and took it exactly as Rush later explained that he intended for it to be taken.

As to things having been removed from the website, only paid members of Rush 24/7 get to see transcripts from any show other than the last one. The old transcripts don't disappear; they just aren't available to the general public.

Roger,
I don't give Limbaugh very much credibility on this or any other moral issue given his own recent problems in that area lately, eh?

I still listen to Rush sometimes but only because he is entertaining and funny. Kind of like a buddy at the bar talking sports: Full of sh*t, but funny.
