"Ask the Imperial Palace" Alert
I know I said I wouldn't keep writing about my "Ask the White House" adventures, but this time I thought y'all might like an alert about one. Coming up at 3:30 EST today, Jim Wilkinson, Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications, is going to be taking questions on "progress in Iraq," a subject which is presumed to be occurring. I suppose it all depends on one's definition of progress.
Anyway, this isn't much warning, but I think the guy deserves a good grilling; so go for it, gang!

You'll be shocked--shocked!--to learn they didn't take any of my questions, which were:
1. President Woodrow Wilson took the United States into World War I on a crusade to "make the world safe for democracy." Unfortunately, that war sowed the seeds that later blossomed into World War II. President Bush has now taken the U.S. into a war to establish democracy in the Middle East (without, I might add, obtaining the constitutionally required declaration of war that President Wilson obtained). How can we be sure that President Bush's war, which has angered many Arabs and Muslims, is not now sowing the seeds of further wars in the Middle East?
2. The Department of Defense says that in the past year 575 Americans have been killed in Iraq. In addition, independent researchers have determined that as many as 6,370 Iraqi soldiers and 10,430 Iraqi civilians have been killed. Could you please explain how over 17,000 human deaths qualify as "progress"?
3. The recently ratified Iraqi interim constitution contains numerous disturbing features. Among the disturbing features: the clearly socialist clauses that the people have "the right to security, education, health care, and social security", and the requirement that citizens protect public property--provisions also found in the constitution of the former Soviet Union; numerous loopholes and caveats allowing the government to search people's homes without a warrant and institute ex post facto laws; denial of the right to keep and bear arms; and explicit quotas for the election of women to the National Assembly. Can you please explain how saddling the Iraqis with a more or less unlimited, socialist government is an improvement over their former condition?
4. In his speech today the president referred to a "planning document being sent to leaders of al Qaeda by . . . Zarqawi." However, NBC News reported on March 2 that the administration had three opportunities prior to the war to capture or kill Zarqawi and wipe out his terrorist operation but failed to do so. "Military officials [said] the administration feared destroying the terrorist camp in Iraq could undercut its case for war against Saddam," reported NBC. In other words, Zarqawi would not be in Iraq today, issuing orders and participating in attacks, if the administration had taken the three earlier opportunities to get him. How does this comport with the administration's stated policy of preempting terrorists before they can strike? Also, how does fighting a terrorist for an entire year when he could have been taken out well before the war constitute "progress"?
They did take some combative questions today, but they were careful to choose ones that could be treated as partisan debates or answered with rhetoric void of (or even contravening) facts. Oh! And once Wilkinson referred to his "holiday card list." He wouldn't dare call it a Christmas card list.

Let me add one more thing.
The best question Wilkinson took was:
"This week Representative Henry Waxman released a report by his Committee on Government Reform titled 'Iraq on the Record - The Bush Administration's Public Statements on Iraq.' The study finds that administration officials (Bush, Cheney, Powell, Rumsfeld and Rice) made 237 specific false or misleading statements regarding the Iraqi threat, most of them in the month prior to the vote for a war resolution. How would you respond to Representative Waxman's report?"
The problem with this question is that it gives Wilkinson too much wiggle room by simply asking "How would you respond?" That gives him plenty of leeway to blather on about UN resolutions, WMDs, and Saddam's atrocities. This is why my questions are always very specific--and why they're never answered.
