Another blow struck for public safety...
Well, the State has once again shown that it is vigorous and unsleeping in its pursuit of those who would threaten American freedom and menace the stupor of the populace. That's right: I got a speeding ticket today. Not just a speed ing ticket, but also a ticket for passing on the wrong side of a broken yellow line, and for passing within 100 feet of an intersection! Good heavens, what mischief I could have caused! Oh, and I didn't have my license on me, either. Needless to say, I didn't mention that it was under suspension in two other states because I refused to obey their coercive and unnecessary liability insurance laws. If I hadn't had my grandmother with me (who, by the way, really came through with a sudden attack of chest pains; way to go, Granny!), I would likely be down at the county hotel rather than tapping out these lines. I plan to fight this one out, and I will pass along any good methods of beating this thing that I happen to think of, though only if they work, of course.

Bummer about the tickets. You should look into purchasing a radar detector.

Driving without insurance: so if you cause an accident, and you don't have insurance, any of your victims is just going to scrape up the money for his bills himself. That isn't right, it's bad, and you're in denial.

Jerome:
The concept of "insurance" is that you buy insurance on yourself and your stuff, to protect them from damage. The perverse idea of insuring other people's things against your own actions is 100% courtesy of the government. If not for government law, liability insurance wouldn't exist.
Ask yourself this: should people be required to buy auto liablility insurance? If so, why not be also required to buy workplace violence liability insurance? Wife-beating liability insurance? Drunken bar-fight liability insurance? The same principle applies in all of those cases, namely that you *might* do something to hurt others, so therefore you *must* be forced to buy insurance "just in case". Imagine asking State Farm for insurance "just in case" you decided to walk into work one day and start shooting people. *That's* how idiotic "liability insurance" is, for anything.
Patrick Yancey has done exactly nothing wrong by not ponying up money for coerced "insurance" (in scare quotes 'cause it's an obvious oxymoron).

Mr. Lopez states the case better than I. Liability insurance requirements stem from the same mindset that justifies "drunk-blocks" and racial profiling (or DWB-"Driving While Black"). When one ventures onto a roadway, one takes one's life into one's hands. Therefore, even if an accident occurs in which one is not at fault, one is responsible for oneself. While I cannot fault an individual for bringing suit after an accident, preemptive compulsory insurance laws are unjustifiable.
