"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Antibiotics No Help for Sinusitis
I knew that to be the case. If the ongoing sinus infection results in a secondary infection, which is typically bacterial, then an anti-biotic is often called for. Overuse and misuse (not taking the full course when they are necessary) of anitbiotics has serious effects, both for the individual and on a broad scale. Over the counter medications can cause problems, too. As I explain to my children, it's not a good idea to use over the counter remedies to supress symptoms, other than a fever reducer if it gets past 100 degrees. That is because, I tell them, your runny nose is your body's way of getting what needs to come out out, as is coughing and sneezing. For a small child, if coughing at night is really interfering with sleep, I may on occasion give cough medicine, as exhaustion will slow the process of getting well. However, for the most part, I let the body do what it needs to to get the sickness out of the system, boosting the immune system with extra Vitamin C foods and other foods that promote immune system function and health, as well as increasing fluids. That reduces the chance of a cold, flu, or sinus issue resulting in a secondary infection, because that stuff isn't staying in there for bacteria to grow. A common sense approach to sickness and health will do wonders in most circumstances. Paying attention to diet and nutrition can help prevent many sicknesses and diseases in the first place.
