"Continuing with the metaphor, the Federal Reserve--the privately-owned central bank of the United States --does nothing but manufacture jelly jars and seal them up tightly, without adding a single drop of jam. They do not even add water or little IOU notes. The Fed just makes jars, and seals them up empty, allowing the apparent magic of quantum jelly-portation do all the work. They are counterfeiting on a truly massive scale." Column by Log from Blammo.
Must Libertarianism Encompass a Government?
Column by Christopher Awuku.
Public 'Threatened' by Private Firearms Ownership
That is what they'd like you to believe. However, it is simply not true that the Second Amendment is a threat to the public, no matter how hard they try to portray it as such. The real problem is that they fear the potential threat the Second Amendment poses to a tyrannical, controlling, government. As well they should. The Founding Fathers wanted it that way.
UK Jails Considering RFID Implants for Prisoners
And, so it begins. You know it never stays with the target population used to make a given assault on fundamental liberty tolerable for the majority. It always bleeds out into the rest of us, slippery slope style, that non-affected majority becoming ever smaller.
FBI Wants Instant Access to British Identity Data
“Senior British police officials are talking to the FBI about an international database to hunt for major criminals and terrorists. The US-initiated programme, 'Server in the Sky', would take cooperation between the police forces way beyond the current faxing of fingerprints across the Atlantic. Allies in the 'war against terror' - the US, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand - have formed a working group, the International Information Consortium, to plan their strategy. Biometric measurements, irises or palm prints as well as fingerprints, and other personal information are likely to be exchanged across the network.”
“Newly ascendant Democrats may have hit roadblocks on Iraq and fiscal issues, but they have revamped congressional menus, replacing fatty, pre-made foods with healthier, gourmet alternatives. The once dreary congressional cafeterias now abound with haute cuisine.” Priorities, you know...
“America,
to pay her bills, has begun to sell herself to the world. Its balance sheet gutted
by the subprime mortgage crisis, Citicorp got a $7.5 billion injection
from Abu Dhabi and is now fishing for $1 billion from Kuwait and $9 billion
from China. Beijing has put $5 billion into Morgan Stanley and bought heavily
into Barclays Bank. Merrill-Lynch, ravaged by subprime mortgage losses, sold
part of itself to Singapore for $7.5 billion and is seeking another $3 billion
to $4 billion from the Arabs. Swiss-based
2007 Wholesale Inflation Up Most in 26 Years
Not that the official inflation numbers mean a damn thing in reality. They manipulate the figures to avoid COLA increases, etc. Imagine how bad it must really be if they are admitting this...
Oil vs. Food, or Why Socialism Isn't Gonna Save Us
“In response to alarms about the fragility of the food system, some farmers are taking initiatives to wean themselves from petroleum and find more sustainable ways of growing food.”
FDA OKs Meat, Milk from Most Cloned Animals
Given the FDA's track record in recent years, I have little trust in what they tell me is safe.
New Services Help Bloggers Bring in Ad Revenue
“If you're not making money off your blog, 2008 might be the year.” The Internet has been the best thing that has happened in my family's economic life.
Jobs Reveals Tiny New Laptop, Confirms iTunes Movie Rentals
Ultimate cool, I want one of those tiny laptops! I think the movie rental is great, too. I like the Apple store, reasonable prices and minimal hassle.
New Study Blames Columbus for Syphilis Spread
“New genetic evidence supports the theory that Christopher Columbus brought syphilis to Europe from the New World, U.S. researchers said Monday, reviving a centuries-old debate about the origins of the disease.”
Study: Drug-Resistant Staph Passed in Gay Sex
“Sexually active gay men in San Francisco are 13 times more likely to be infected than their heterosexual neighbors, the researchers reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine. 'Once this reaches the general population, it will be truly unstoppable,' said Binh Diep, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco who led the study. 'That's why we're trying to spread the message of prevention'." I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop on this story...I bet there is something else coming down the line. A vaccine or other cha-ching pseudo-solution adding to Big Pharm coffers, maybe? Some new assault on liberty or common sense, perhaps?
Germans Puff On As Smoking Ban Fizzles
"'I'm smoking because no one's stopping me,' Blum, 43, said from behind his laptop, one of a dozen customers happily smoking without fear. 'The cafes aren't making it difficult.' Blum is just one of many disobeying a law banning smoking in public places -- cafes, bars, restaurants and night clubs -- in force in Berlin and 11 other German states from January 1.” I love to see people ignoring intrusive laws.
