150 YEARS AGO: State Official Severs Political Ties with Congressman in Letter Denouncing Lincoln

“Four more years under President Abraham Lincoln 'will irretrievably and hopelessly destroy' the United States as a land of constitutionally protected freedom, state Register of Lands Sample Orr wrote to U.S. Rep. James Rollins.” Not that the Constitution was doing a bang of job of do that anyway, but Lincoln's presidency certainly pushed things further along.
