"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
“No Borscht for You!” U.S. Sanctions Unite Russians with Flippant Bans of Obama
Submitted by Sharon Secor on Mon, 2014-03-24 03:00
“Russian officials have openly joked about the U.S. sanctions, which have been widely seen as ineffective so far. “The only things that interest me in the U.S. are Tupac Shakur, Allen Ginsberg and Jackson Pollock,” Kremlin adviser Vladislav Surkov said last week. “I don’t need a visa to access their work. I lose nothing.” Ridicule is a powerful weapon. May the mockery continue and the laughter remain strong.

The U.S. reliance on trade sanctions to produce diplomatic pressure only serves as a depressing reminder than Americans just don't export as much as they once did, and that the U.S. government is all too willing to cut American producers off from their foreign markets for political purposes.
But there may be other motives. Vigorous trade between nations is one of the most powerful deterrents to war yet identified. Cutting trade is often a precursor to military adventures.
